Benjamin Franklin :: Biography Biographies

benjamin franklin Ben Franklin was one of the most amazing men history has recorded. Throughout his lifetime he continued to increase his already genius-level intelligence. He had a high quality of life, was a popular political figure, and he strongly believed in his thoughts, beliefs, and ideas. While he wasn’t perfect, that was what he struggled to attain. Ben’s achievements are very numerous. Apart from being a genius after only 2 years of schooling, his other achievements show that he was an overachiever. Some of Ben’s achievements are literature-based. For example, he printed the first novel published in America. He also started the first circulating library in America. Also, year after year, he wrote and published Poor Richard’s Almanac. Those weren’t his only achievements though. He organized the first hospital, started mail delivery, organized the first "fire company", that is, firefighters; and was a city representative, too! All this is just more proof of him being an overachiever. Because of Franklin’s many inventions and experiments, our lives today are better. Ben made the first copperplate printing press in America, a chair with a built in table for writing, and a chair that turned into a step ladder for his library. He also invented the odometer, a heating unit called the "Pennsylvania Stove", the lightning rod, bifocals, an electricity generator, and the armonica. By experimenting, he proved that dark materials absorb more than light materials, proved lightning was electricity, and did many more experiments with static and regular electricity. He also introduced artificial fertilizer and discovered lead poisoning. We all should be grateful for how he has improved our lifestyle today. Ben’s childhood started out like anyone else’s, but when he became around age 10, he started to become different. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1706. The 15th of 17 children, school was not cheap, so he only got to go for 2 years. He started out making soap and candles, but after expressing that he didn’t like that, he would like to write, he became apprenticed to his brother, James, who was a printer. James wouldn’t publish Ben’s work, so he submitted it under the name Mrs. Silence Dogood. When James found out, Ben ran away to Philadelphia, Where he would marry and live the majority of the rest of his life.

Planning And Threat Assesment Essay

Abstract   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     When one is determining the credibility and seriousness of a threat, then he is engaged in the process known as Threat assessment. A threat may be individual security threat, a group security threat, a bombing threat or even a fire setting threat. Threat assessment also investigates the probability of the   peril being carried out. Once a potential threat has been assessed and is seen as serious, prevention and mitigation steps are carried out. The context of threat is very important when interpreting risks (Feher, 45).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In order to evaluate threat, some questions should be addressed. Some of the question is the character of the threat, what is the objective of the threatener, what does the threatener want to put across, the victim’s sensitivity to the threat, how credible is the threat, the threatener’s aim, is   there a secondary gain targeted by the threatener? When addressed the questions will help in evaluating the threat; the threat’s credibility and chances of its occurring (Dietz, 129).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In threat assessment, planning is imperative because it reduces the chances of the threat occurring. It also mitigates the effects of the threat, resolve their implications, and insulate the fallout and builds confidence of the parties involved. Threat assessment is not solely about security concerns although it is its primary concern (Borum, 335).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   A general framework of threat assessment should incorporate the identification of threat or emergency, estimate of probability, development of prevention and mitigation strategies and resource allocation of which should be based on evaluation of likelihood of occurrence and impact.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Planning should be dynamic and contextual since one strategy will not fit all the threats that may concern an individual detail, planning must reckon with the context. Planning also needs continued evaluation of likelihood of occurrence and effect of prevention and mitigation of the effects and of changing context. Planning is a fact (Boon, 77). Planning and threat assessment: Case study of a white supremacist principal   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   When planning the detail of security for the principal, it is imperative to identify the threat at hand. My principal is a white supremacist and has many enemies. He cannot defend himself when confronted with a threat since is confined to a wheelchair 24 hours a day. His security detail must also be inclusive of a nurse who may not know how to handle precarious situations and may be under threat herself. She must be protected from harm at all cost because the principal is dependent on her.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Being a white supremacist, he is under threat of other races especially the blacks and Latinos. They both have a history of violence especially when racially discriminated against. The have access to sophisticated weapons and they are capable of planning an ambush on the highways. There have been rumors circulating around Los Angeles that black supremacists have put a figure on the principal’s head. They are known to possess a lot of money and influence in the Los Angeles Ghettos.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Apart from the Blacks and Latinos, the principal has other enemies as well. Apart from other races that would have all the motivation to eliminate him, he also has white enemies as well. Some of them are said to be connected to the mafia and so they could attack anywhere and anytime. They can also use the government officials to accomplish their desires.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   One of the other threats is that a rival white supremacist group is suspected of being behind a series of murders and the recent brutal beating of the principal’s assistant chief. The media has already speculated that they are fighting for political power in the State of California among the white supremacists movement.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The main threat is outside the courthouse. He is to defendant to charges of murder and civil rights violation, especially to the non-whites races. This is because the many of the rival groups and extremists will be attending the hearing. These include fundamentalist’s religious groups, civil rights activists, and other white supremacist groups among others. It is anticipated that the hearing will be very emotional and might spark off anger that could turn out to be violent.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   One concern that the security detail of the principal has is the withdrawal of police from his security detail. The chief of police has said that his men will not be responsible for the principal’s security. It is a concern because the principal want to make a grand entry to the court and also want to talk to the press. This is a major threat because the principal might spark off anger before entering the court, plus putting his numerous enemies on the picture, his life would be at a threat of gunning down by a sharp shooter placed anywhere in the surrounding court environment. It is particularly hazardous because the court is surrounded by skyscraper buildings. Mitigation of threat   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In order to mitigate the chance of the threat that is currently facing the principal, it is important to note what could be done to avoid the threat from occurring at all. It is also important to note that at our disposal we have only eight security men covering the principal, and this against the very large force of enemies is a very little number of security details.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   First we have to avoid the highways whenever possible. This is because the Blacks and Latinos have the tendency to lay an ambush on the highways and this may also be an incentive for other rivals to Lay ambush on the principal’s motorcade. An alternative means of transportation is paramount to evade the risk of the highways. It would be prudent to hire a helicopter for the principal, the nurse another security man and to oversee that the principal travel from home to the courthouse grounds without the necessity to go through the highways.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Since it is not practical for all the security detail to go with the helicopter, prior arrangement must be done so that the rest of the security detail get to court on time. It must be before the principal’s helicopter reaches court. They will be responsible for determining the threat that will be facing the principal and organizing for the general security of the principal when he arrives in court.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There will also be the need for acquiring vehicles for the rest of the security detail. There will need to be enough vehicles for the transport of the entire security detail so a minimum of three vehicles will be needed. The vehicles should be parked in strategic places for the immediate departure should a necessity occur after the hearing. The same should apply to the helicopter. These vehicles will need to be unmarked and cannot by any chance be linked to the principal as this may compromise the security detail. If possible the vehicles should be new.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Communication should be of high quality so that the security detail on the ground monitoring the situation should in contact with helicopter at all time. The communication gadgets should be free off interference from outside parties and should be very alert of outside parties listening in. State of the art communication systems will be employed when   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In order to minimize the occurrence of threat, the security detail should be very particular on timing. Regardless of the principal wanting to make a grand entrance to the court, little contact should be encourage between the principal and outside parties particularly the press. More time being afforded to the principal and the outside parties increases the occurrence of threat. The timing should be that the time of arrival of the principal will minimize the time of contact with the outside parties. After hearing all the security detail should be on hand to ensure the minimal contact of the principal to the outside parties. I being the head of the security detail will explain the importance of this to the principal should he need any explanations as to why he was not allowed maximum contact with the outside parties and press.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   More security details need to be hired to help the strained security details. There will be need to look for capable men of handling this assignment and so as to enhance the security of the principal.   Resource Allocation   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   After threat assessment, it is necessary to allocate some resources so that they can be used to avoid the threat from happening.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In our case of the principal, there will be need to hire a helicopter but it would be more economical to buy one because the principal will need to be traveling so more after the trip to the court. This will reduce the risk of being ambushed by the enemies on the highways.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There is also the need to invest on new vehicles for the security detail. This is because the vehicles will need not to be linked to the principal as this could jeopardize the safety of the principal and the security detail as well.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There is also the need for the investment in state of the art communication devices. This will enhance the effective security monitoring and the communication of possible threat from the ground to the helicopter.   Conclusion   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Considering all the threats that face individuals and given the concern for public safety, there is a public wish to establish a threat assessment program for the pubic as well as individuals. Most prone to these threats are public figures, celebrities, leaders of all sorts including fundamentalists and supremacists and witnesses among many more members of the public (Baxter, 194).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Such programs require preparation, knowledge and deverness in order to be capable of identifying serious threats as well as intervening and addressing them in public. These should be done in such a manner as not to inappropriately heighten public fears and thus causing overreacting of the public. References Baxter, V. Margavio, A. (1996). Employment Story Essay

I first joined the army in 1996 and have been part of what most soldiers probably considers as the most important unit of any command, the Food Supply Unit. My battlefield is the kitchen where I rose from the ranks where my army soldier rank promotions became commensurate to my rise in the kitchen ranks. When I became Private First Class in 98, I also earned the title of First Cook. 2001 saw me become a Staff Sergeant on the field and a Senior First Cook in the Mess Kitchen. Currently, I am now Sergeant First Class and serving as the Dining Facility Manager as well. Being a Dining Facility Manager is not an easy job. I have to know how to manage twenty-five people and multi task between meal planning, cooking, and food distribution at base camp and on the field. Sometimes, it can turn into a real headache, especially when I have to accomplish the job in a war zone situation. I have done everything from planning meal drops to soldiers on the field, preparing the commanding officers meals, and when unavoidable, I can plan wedding receptions for my comrades who get married on base camp as well. I believe that I have served both my country and my fellow soldiers well. Together with my unit, I have done duty on two peace keeping missions as well as served in the war. I know that a soldier cannot fight on an empty stomach that is why my priority on the battle field is to make sure that all the units are well fed regardless of the combat situation. When somebody offers me a new job, I always tell that person the story about how I got to combine my two passions in the world into one very important job. I’ve always been a patriot and a cook at heart. Working in the army has allowed me to live my dream job. That is to serve and protect my country and the free world while cooking up a storm and learning new recipes while serving on the field.

Child Proofing a Home Room by Room

This is a parent’s basic guide to properly child-proofing a home room by room. In this guide to child proofing a home you will find instructions to do it yourself, a safety check for new babies, car safety, and safety tips for older children as well. My purpose for this guide is to help parents keep their children safe at home and on the road. Bathroom Safety Toilets and bathtubs – You must always be careful when it come to the risk of drowning and when it comes to your child. Your child should never be left alone around water in your home. When giving you child a bath keep an eye on him/her 100% of the time, drowning can happen in a matter of a second, so if your phone rings or someone is at the door and you think you need to answer it then you should take your child with you wrapped in a towel. Install a toilet lid lock – Everyone knows that children love to play in the toilet, so getting a toilet lid lock is always the best idea to avoid that situation and also to avoid drowning. Children can fall head first in the toilet and drown that is why a toilet lid lock is a great idea for parents. Sharp objects – when you children are in the washroom with you, keeping an eye on them at all time is a must, because they can find sharp objects like nail clippers, razors, and scissors. Those objects and many more can seriously injure a child. All objects such as those and others should be put away in a place where a child would not be able to find them. For example: on a high shelf or in a drawer that has a lock on it. Kitchen Safety Stove – when a child is in the kitchen the stove should either be off or watching the child very well when trying to cook a meal and also make sure all the handles on the pots and pans are turned to the inside of the stove so the children can’t reach them. Sharp objects – sharp objects such as knives or even forks should be put in a place where the child can’t get to them as well because no one wants their child to be injured. The best thing to do is to put door locks on all cupboards and drawers so the children can’t get any injuries. Gates – the best way to avoid injuries in the kitchen is to put up gates in the entrances to keep the children away from the kitchen. Stairs safety Stairs – the stairs in the house should always have a gate blocking the children from going up and down, because a parent can turn their eye in one minute and the child could be falling down the stairs and cause serious injuries. Living Room Breakable items – make sure that all the items that are made of glass or are fragile are put away because children will try to get to it and it could hurt the child in some way by it breaking. Floor – the floor should be checked for small objects so the children do not choke. Extension Cords – extension cords should be somewhere plugged in somewhere that a child is not able to get to because if a child chews on it or even touches it the wrong way could get seriously burned or even shocked. Tables – tables that have sharp corners can always be protected by rubber corner guards so the children do not hit their heads and cause an injury. Child’s room Always put the ointments and powders away on a shelf in the closet where the child cannot get to them. Make sure that the crib is not near the window to avoid the draft. Also use a crib that was built after 1986 to avoid strangulation. A safety check for children For ages 0-6 months of age, babies are just learning to move around. When changing a baby’s diaper always keep one hand on the stomach to avoid the baby from failing. When the parents are eating or drinking anything hot it is not a good idea to hold the baby at that time, because there is always that chance that the hot stuff could spill on the baby and cause a serious burn. To avoid suffocation, always lay your baby on his/her back. Never use a pillow until the child is at the age of 1 year old, also keep buttons and other small objects out of a baby’s reach to avoid choking. When a baby is starting to eat solids the best thing to do is to feed him/her small pieces and watch the child very closely. Car seat safety for newborns and older A newborn to a young toddler needs a car seat every time they are going for a ride in the car. Always place the car seat in the backseat of the car to avoid the airbag, because the airbag is very dangerous for the baby. By looking at the instructions on the car seat packaging there will be instructions on how to place the car seat the right way in the car. This was a guide helping child proofing homes for children a little easier. In this guide you have learned how to child proof every room in the house to make sure your children are safe. There was a safety check as well for children when they just come from being born, and as well safety tips for when putting your child in a car seat. My purpose was to make it easier for parents to child proof their homes, and also to make it a safer environment for their children.

Intelligence Led Policing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words - 1

Intelligence Led Policing - Essay Example Also, in case of the operators delving into investigations centering on specific targets, appropriate intelligence allows them to narrow their approaches on more plausible lines of investigation. Intelligence tends to be a three-pronged law enforcement utility. It is a process, a product and a structure at one and the same time. It strengthens the law enforcement and public safety organizations by helping them better understand the environment they are assigned to police. However, while resorting to intelligence-led policing, it is also an onus of the law enforcement organizations and officials to look to it that it gets practiced within its legal boundaries. It is really interesting to note that the very mention of the word intelligence conjures up wrong images in the minds of many people (Ratcliffe, 2008, p. 263). To the common people, the word intelligence often sums up to be a clandestine or covert operation conducted by officers who tend to specialize in shady law enforcement activities, which to some extent tends to carry along with it a tinge of moral ambiguity (Ratcliffe, 2008, p. 263). However, in the context of the crime intelligence analysts, it stands to be a systematic, methodical and logical approach towards things that immensely aids the understanding of the criminal environment in which the law enforcement personnel are required to operate (Ratcliffe, 2008, p. 263). However, there is no denying the fact that in the post 9/11, information-saturated world, the nature and scope of intelligence are still ignored, misunderstood or unceremoniously sidelined. Yet, the things are sure changing for better. Many salient experts and opinion makers are of the view that the concept of intelligence-led policing is now being widely recognized by the police services around the world as an essential aspect of the way they work and operate (Wardlaw & Boughton, 2006).

Benjamin Franklin Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Benjamin Franklin - Assignment Example He helped James create pamphlets. He wrote letters under the name of a fictional widow named Dogood. He used to write particularly about how women were being treated. It was an instant hit in the market. And everyone wanted to know the real name of Silence Dogood. During those times, Smallpox was a deadly disease which according to Mr. Benjamin could be cured only by inoculation. But while people liked this idea, they didn’t like the way Mr. Benjamin made fun of clergy. Hence Mr. Benjamin was jailed. After his release from jail, James and Mr. Benjamin had a fight which forced him to run away to Philadelphia (Isaacson, 2003). One of his main accomplishments during the period was launching of the Library Company in 1731. This led to the birth of first subscription library. He also helped launching of American Philosophy Society, which was the first learned society in America. In 1751 he also formed the Pennsylvania Hospital after recognizing the need to treat the sick people in a better way. He founded Philadelphia’s Union Fire Company to help people from the problem of fire, which was the first in the city. Sometimes individual’s house was damaged by fire leading to irreversible loss. At that time England had many amenities which Americans lacked. England also had fine theatre, thinkers and witty conversation. International Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 14

International Business - Essay Example In the year 2008, more than 1 million people acquired certification in IELTS (IELTS Press Release, 2008). Every year, more than 2 million people hailing from nearly 135 countries appear for IELTS (IELTS Press Release, 2008). Amongst them, a vast number of candidates happen to be from India. With the opening up of economy and the onset of globalization, every year a vast number of Indian citizens, aspiring to study or immigrate abroad, appear for IELTS (McDaniel, 2004). Considering the fact that a majority of these candidates give great importance to this test, owing to its pivotal role in the achievement of their career goals, setting up a chain of IELTS coaching centers in India stands to be a very positive business proposition. A majority of the employees recruited for this venture will be Indians. This is because they are apt to possess the local cultural competencies, which will go well with the Indian customers. Hence, awareness of cultural dimensions and characteristics will play a pivotal role in the chalking out of an effective business strategy in India. However, as IELTS is a test with an international appeal, care will be taken to introduce at least one native English speaking teacher at each center. The planning and administration will be such as to show sensitivity for the cultural norms and values of the Indian employees and customers. Specific effort will be made to make decisions guided by the insights gained into the values and attitudes of Indian employees. Locations: Due to strategic reasons, the first five coaching centers will be started at New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and Chandigarh. The reason is that these cities stand to be urban and economic hubs in India. The employees here will be more likely to be open to cultural convergence. The value system of administrators and employees recruited from these places are more probable to be in consonance with global values and norms. They will be more willing to customize their
